USPS moves forward with same-day delivery trial
The U.S. Postal Service recently saw the shipping game change before its eyes, and it knew it had to act quickly. Competitors in the shipping industry - including Amazon and UPS - started offering same-day delivery services. However, the playing field has been leveled after the USPS announced it had decided to go ahead with a same-day delivery service trial period. Considering the urgency of each package, time-saving postal mailing software would be a beneficial asset to use.
The USPS had initially announced it would seek to implement the test service in San Francisco, which would serve merchants with an online store and at least 10 brick-and-mortar shops nationwide.
Now, the USPS has submitted a filing to the Postal Regulatory Commission informing the body that the USPS intends to start the experimental program. The service, dubbed "Metro Post" will start on December 12 and run for one year.
“We believe Metro Post will be a game changer [by] offering customers an improved shopping experience while allowing USPS to achieve a core goal of growing the package business," John Friess, spokesman for the USPS, told Post and Parcel.
It's estimated Metro Post will move some 200 packages a day. Metro Post is also expected to generate $10 million, despite being a relatively small experiment that could be introduced to other urban areas if it goes well.
