USPS debuts 'Music Icons' stamp series for 2013
The U.S. Postal Service will start singing the praises of a select few musicians after it announced a new stamp set called "Music Icons," just the latest of many announcements about the USPS' plans for stamps in 2013. Businesses that plan to honor the famous musicians on their direct mail should make sure to use address verification software to ensure they reach every address, like singers who hit every note.
The inaugural stamp in the collection will feature Lydia Mendoza, who was referred to as "La Alondra de la Frontera," or The Lark of the Border. She is commonly known as one of the pioneers of the Tejano music style, or Tex-Mex music, that originated along the southern border of Texas.
The stamp features a black-and-white publicity photo of Mendoza taken by her record label and features her smiling with her 12-string guitar in hand. The state flag of Texas is superimposed over her image and is designed to look aged and distressed, like a vintage record sleeve would look in the present.
Mendoza recorded more than 1,000 songs in her seven-decade career and is best known for her solo performances and hit "Mal Hombre," or "Evil Man." Mendoza's stamp will be issued as a Forever stamp.
