Flowers get contemporary art makeover for 2013 stamp
So far, the first two stamps the U.S. Postal Service has announced for issuance in 2013 have honored history with their designs. The first celebrates the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation; the other recognizes the 40th anniversary of the Love series stamps.
The third stamp announced to hit envelopes in 2013 does involve a tried-and-true trope, however, it puts a distinctive modern flair on the design. Another new era innovation sure to be of service to direct mailer senders in 2013 is address verification software.
Flowers have been a mainstay of USPS stamps, but the 2013 stamp will be distinctive from the others. While previous stamps mainly depicted the foliage as a still-life, the Kaleidoscope Flowers stamp set will transform flowers to look like contemporary art.
The four-stamp set features four flowers drawn the same way but with different colors. The shapes and curves that constitute the flowers were drawn to represent the view one would have looking through a kaleidoscope.
The color combinations include green and purple; green, pink and black; red and blue; and orange and violet.
A USPS blog post said the visual graphics were made with such attention to detail that if stared at long enough, the patterns of the flowers seem to be in motion.
