Canada Post introduces new War of 1812 stamps
Canada Post recently revealed two new stamps in its War of 1812 collection. The latest set commemorates the legends of Laura Secord and Lieutenant-Colonel Charles de Salaberry who defended the country in a battle against the Americans.
The stamps are designed to highlight the details of each hero's efforts and the obstacles they encountered on the way.
"The events of the War of 1812 helped define the territory that would become Canada," said the Honorable Steven Fletcher, Minister of State for Transport. "Charles de Salaberry and Laura Secord both played a vital role in halting invading forces through courage and conviction. They are truly Canadian heroes and I am thrilled they are being honored for the important role they played in the Canadian victory of the War of 1812."
Secord walked an astounding 30 kilometers through the wilderness to warn the Britons of a possible attack by the Americans. She overheard the Americans' plan and felt it her duty to defend her country. Her efforts made it possible for the British to capture 400 American soldiers.
De Salaberry used his knowledge of the area to outsmart American forces trying to capture Montreal. In a combined effort of de Salaberry's strategic decisions and exceptional fighting on behalf of his troops, the Battle of Chateauguay went to the Canadians.
"Canada Post creates stamps that tell Canada's story," said Deepak Chopra, president and CEO of Canada Post. "They serve as reminders of the fabric of our past. Today's commemorative stamps celebrate the bold initiative and determination of two people whose efforts should not be forgotten."
