USPS poised to layoff thousands, could impact direct marketing professionals
The United States Postal Service has been struggling for years now, losing substantial amounts of money in order to keep its letter carrying service up and running. To tackle these issues, the agency has proposed cutting its workforce by as much as 20 percent, leaving some in the direct mail marketing industry apprehensive about how well it will function in the future.
Marketing professionals everywhere rely on USPS staff to deliver materials. some of which were created using web-to-print software. Yet, with $20 billion in losses over the past four years, the agency is looking to reduce its staff by as much as 220,000 employees. According to a statement from the postal service, the decisions would help make the agency more efficient.
"Everything is on the table, and Congress has not provided solutions to give the Postal Service a sustainable business model," said David Partenheimer, a USPS spokesman, in a statement. "If we put options and proposals out there, it’s at least a starting point rather than waiting for Congress to come up with proposals.”
