Stamps honor choreography greats on National Dance Day
The line of Innovative Choreographers Forever stamps featuring four dance choreography icons - Isadora Duncan, José Limón, Katherine Dunham and Bob Fosse - will be announced live on TV during the July 18 episode of Fox's So You Think You Can Dance. Even more fitting, the First Day of Issue will take place on the third annual National Dance Day on July 28.
The four featured choreographers, captured in time on the stamps in their best-known poses and works, are considered to have been founders of modern dance and choreography. Fosse, whose style of dance is still mainstay on modern Broadway and in pop culture, won numerous Tony and Emmy awards and an Oscar in his career.
According to Beyond the Perf, the series was "designed to look like posters advertising a performance … Art Director Ethel Kessler designed the stamps using illustrations by James McMullan, widely known for his work for Lincoln Center Theater in New York City."
The First-Day-of-Issue ceremony for the choreography series will take place on National Dance Day in Grand Park in downtown Los Angeles. Featured attendees include modern dance greats and Ruth Goldway, U.S. Postal Regulatory Commission chairman.
