Changes to Canada Post operations signal need for mailing software
As Canada Post adjusts its operations to suit its fiscal situation, businesses can overcome many of the challenges of reaching consumers with mailing software, avoiding delays associated with bad addresses. Meanwhile, The Calgary Herald reported the Canadian postal service suffered second-quarter losses of $104 million, prompting many business owners to reassess their direct mail strategy.
Richard Truscott, Alberta director for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, told the newspaper small-business owners are concerned about the stability of mailing service given Canada Post's state of financial affairs, prompting many enterprises to hold consultations with the government agency to share their perspective. While Truscott conceded many entrepreneurs and young businesses are increasingly handling customer interactions online, there is still a great number of Canadian businesses that depend on the postal service to be the vehicle for communication and delivering marketing materials.
Canada Post has already enacted changes that may affect speed of service. Nanaimo Daily News reported all Vancouver Island letter mail will be processed on the Canadian mainland at the Vancouver Processing Plant. Some Canada Post employees are bemoaning the move, stating it will cause service delays, but the postal agency assured workers and business owners the sorting machines in the facility will help the organization maintain customer satisfaction. The postal service explained the equipment at the Vancouver processing location can sort through 35,000 mail pieces per hour.
Anick Losier, a spokeswoman for Canada Post, explained employees should have no concern over job security in spite of the use of equipment to sort the mail. Moreover, trucking mail to the mainland will be more cost-effective for the postal agency, saving it money that can be spent to improve efficiencies elsewhere. As more changes come to the Canadian postal system, businesses must be ready to reach their customers and business partners, making address validation software a necessity.
